Basketball night

Posted: November 22nd, 2006 @ 2:40am

On Saturday, November 11th, our 7th-9th grade girls came together to compete in a basketball tournament. The past 11 weeks, they have been learning basketball in P.E. class, and the staff thought it a good idea to have a competition. Inviting all the 7 th -9th grade boys, the staff, volunteers and of course Mami and Papi, the gym came alive with much yelling and cheering from all who were present.

The night turned out very well with 3 very intense games. The over all winner, with a score of 26 to 6 were the 9th graders who competed with the 8th graders in the ultimate game. The MVP, however, came from the 8 th grade class, Lourdes Yadira, who never gave up that night and played her heart out.

"There is so much athletic talent among our girls. However, not all involved in the P.E. class enjoy the game of basketball which made it a little difficult to teach the game to everyone and get them all involved." quotes Mandy, the girls P.E. teacher. This led her to the idea of forming a basketball team. This team would only include the girls who are interested and desire to truly know how to play the game….all the rules, the organization, how to shoot properly, breaking habits like double-dribbling etc. They would meet on a regular basis and practice like a real team and one day hopefully be able to compete against girls from outside schools. This is Mandy's vision, and she prays this will bring a motivation into the lives of some of these girls who have very little and also a discipline that they can learn from being a part of a team especially an organized, athletic team.

Please pray as this vision is prayed over and discussed. Pray that these P.E. classes can be an opportunity not only to learn sports and exercise, but for Mandy to be able to share the truth of the Word to these girls through their small devotional time at the beginning of each class and leading by example through her life. Also, pray for these girls to learn team work and how to stop saying "I can't". This also being a vision of Mandy's. So much can happen with a little motivation, and a lot of prayer.
